Satellites Built Today Must Outlive the Encryption Protecting Them

The security problem in space is not one system, it is the number of seams. Cryptographic discovery and inventory has become the first billable step in almost every serious post-quantum programme, ahead of any decision about what to replace it with.
Europe is moving on this in public. The demonstration side of the market has already shown the approach can work on live infrastructure rather than in a laboratory, and agencies responsible for long-lived orbital assets are now in the position of writing requirements. For companies with cryptographic discovery, migration planning and quantum-resilient security capability, the practical question is whether they are in the room while those requirements are being drafted, or reading them afterwards.

Quantum Secure Encryption Corp. Arqit Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: ARQQ) announced on September 1, 2026, together with Qatar satellite operator Es’hailSat and systems integrator Advanced International Electronic Equipment Company, the successful demonstration of quantum-safe security across operational satellite communications infrastructure. The trial ran at Es’hailSat’s Tier-4 certified Teleport facility in Doha using the live Es’hail-1 satellite at the 25.5 and 26 degrees East orbital hotspot.
The detail that makes it relevant is the absence of new hardware. The companies reported that quantum-safe cryptographic protection was introduced across existing satellite-connected networks with no adverse effect on existing systems, services or operational performance. Chief Executive Andy Leaver described it as proving a practical path to quantum-safe resilience without requiring operators to rebuild existing infrastructure. Arqit’s products span Encryption Intelligence, which detects cryptographic exposure and maps dependencies, and NetworkSecure, which protects data in transit. It is a materially larger and differently financed company and is referenced as sector context rather than as a comparable.
IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) raised its full year 2026 revenue outlook to between $450 million and $460 million in September 2026, incorporating contributions following its SkyWater consolidation. At IEEE Quantum Week 2026 the company presented nine peer-reviewed papers, four of which received Best Paper Awards, covering hybrid high-performance computing and quantum artificial intelligence workflows.
IonQ sits on the other side of this market and is the reason the security side exists. Post-quantum cryptography is a response to the machines that companies like IonQ are building, and the commercial scale now attached to that effort is what has moved migration timelines from theoretical to budgeted. A security vendor and a quantum computing manufacturer are not competitors, and neither is a comparable of the other.
Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ: RKLB) was awarded a $266 million multi-launch contract with the U.S. Space Force in July 2026, its largest launch contract to date, covering 12 suborbital launches with up to six additional launches under the Space Systems Command Rocket Systems Launch Program, primarily from a new location at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska. In August it was selected by Viasat to build a GEO satellite bus for the Protected Tactical SATCOM-Global program and was onboarded to the Space Force’s Space Data Network Consortium.
Rocket Lab is included because it illustrates the scale and the lifecycle of the assets this security conversation is about. Anti-jam national security satellites and protected tactical communications programmes are precisely the long-lived, high-value systems where cryptographic agility has to be designed in rather than retrofitted. It is a launch and space systems company, not a security company, and its results are not indicative of any security vendor’s prospects.
Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) operates the world’s largest commercial fleet of Earth observation satellites, the same category of programme QSE engaged with at ESA. The company reported record revenue in its most recent quarter, has been expanding into sovereign and national-level data programmes including a national satellite data programme announced with the Government of Rwanda in August 2026, and has been adding European defense work.
Earth observation is where the security question gets sharpest, because the data has national security value, the customers are increasingly governments, and the imagery archive has a long useful life. An archive that matters in 2040 has to be protected by cryptography that still holds in 2040. Planet Labs is a capital-intensive constellation operator at a completely different stage and scale and is named solely as sector context.
